Ways to do Pesterquest sprites?

ive been trying to make some pesterquest-like sprites for a fankid, and while i think ive found the right track, it is really Really weird how it seems like the one thing nobody has hopped on to talk or make guides about it?
stuff like line width or brush types, or just general sprite height and width suggestions, the only thing i managed to find that somewhat helped was a tumblr guide of sprite editing, but i feel like theres gotta be something else missing in all of that, right?
