What the hell does Revolutionary Girl Utena have to do with Homestuck?

So, recently I was just clicking through the panels of Homestuck^2 and I happened to notice a particular poster for the anime Revolutionary Girl Utena. Keep in mind, while I do know that it exists, I'm completely unfamiliar with the actual plot of the show. What would warrant the appearance of such a icon, and has it had relevance to Homestuck prior to the sequel?

Dirk's a canon weeaboo, and probably just set it up there himseelf. It's meant to be a subversive work - as far as I know, that's the only connection.

I mean true. I've also heard that OD is a stan for it so that may have warranted it. Though honestly im just not getting how it plays into the greater story.

Utena and homestuck both draw heavily from gnosticism.

There's some connections, mostly in the way they're constructed as metanarratives and the fact that they're coming of age stories? But if you want an honest answer, it's because it's pretty gay and the writers probably like it.

It was absolutely Taz. He's an Utena super-fan and considering he's an HS2 writer, there is absolutely going to be more Utena references as well as Utena-inspired...stuff, in the story.
And yes, both Utena and Homestuck borrow heavily from Gnosticism in terms of theming and various other things.

utena is both gay and meta, so its a pretty natural fit.
also just knowing dirk's personality its absolutely the kind of high-brow anime he'd use to justify weeb superiority over other anime fans, given the opportunity.

Dirk probably also goes on huge tirades about Neon Genesis Evangelion and refuses to acknowledge anyone’s upset feelings about the movie

Notably, the other two posters next to Utena are Gravitation and Sarazanmai. Gravitation is a late 90s bl anime and Sarazanmai, while I'm not super familiar with it, has major gay romance(s?). So the gay part I think is a pretty big factor- Dirk's got that one pride flag in there now too.

Think he would complain about Shinji being a bitch despite having a literal god's power at his command.

Do note that Sarazanmai was also directed by Horikoshi, the director of Utena. ALL of Horikoshi's discography is going to end up in Homestuck at some point if Taz has anything to say about it. Which he does.
