Art resources: The thread: The opening post

Post by burnt2ashleys » Thu Nov 21, 2019 2:31 pm

Hey there! Name's Ashley. Let's talk art. Everypony likes art! Even those who don't!
So, if you like art and feel so inclined to start making some, or you already make art and want to get better? Then boy howdy do I got the thread for you.

Preliminary things that must be said: Most of the resources I'll post here are free, the point of this thread is to shine light upon books, videos and other types of resources that I found and that you may not have heard of, but there will be ones I find important that I will mention that do require you to cough up a couple of bucks. But you can find them regardless if you know where to look. You didn't hear that from me, though. As for materials, I use Faber-Castell Regent pencils (Staedtler's pencils also works very well, they also have 2.0mm lead holders, which are also byootiful), a kneaded eraser, and a Canson sketchbook, among other things. The point of telling you this? Drawing traditionally is always important, so knowing what you're drawing with is paramount. For the love of expletives, don't use ruled notebooks, for your own sake and sanity.

Now that that's said, kickstarting this thread with some elementary resources: Andrew Loomis
http://www.alexhays.com/loomis/
my suggestion? Start with Fun With A Pencil, a great and easy introduction to most drawing methods.

If you have any resources of any kind that you'd like to post here, by all means, feel free to do so!

Let's continue with this:
https://imgur.com/a/OPNU8KW is a nice series of 9 images that I quite like, I recommend following through with these exercises!
The other thing I'd recommend looking into is Dynamic Sketching, by Peter Han: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFVggG7ajXM
There are other resources which fit into basics, but I don't remember them off the top of my head, so I'll post them here as I remember them.
Knowing how to draw forms (small distinction I make: 2D things like circles and squares I call shapes, 3D things like spheres and cubes I call forms, Fun With A Pencil talks about that) is one thing, but they're all in space or some shit, so we need to deal with perspective. For that, the book Perspective Made Easy by Ernest R. Norling, which I found for free here, is the best book for getting started into the subject: http://www.storytellerartist.com/docume ... e_Easy.pdf
Addendum: Fun With A Pencil also addresses perspective, as well as a whole host of other stuff that you might want or need to know about, so don't shy away from cross-referencing! Make your studies and draw (heh) you're own conclusions!

Figure drawing! The area of drawing concerned in drawing... figures, people!
There are 2 main resources that I personally use: Riven Phoenix' course, and Michael Hampton's book. Riven Phoenix's course can be found here, on Steam
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4949 ... Course_HD/
Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing Design and Invention I found here, after a quick DuckDuckGo search
https://anatomiaartistica.files.wordpre ... tion-1.pdf
There are many other places that you can go, such as YouTube channels: Dan Beardshaw, Proko, thekirkshop, Scott Robertson, moderndayjames, all great places to get some art knowledge all around, and I'd like to put emphasis on this guy: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNPLX1 ... r4eKvmhLGQ, who's a university art teacher who uploads hours upon hours of content for free, there for your leisure and at your disposal at any time, just pick a playlist.
Here are some miscellaneous YouTube videos that you can watch, just so you can get that algorithm to work in your favor and give you more art videos that you may not have known about:

It's your art librarian, Ashley, back at it again with the art resources, this time with some links I found on YouTube:
https://youtu.be/f4353W2Xqm0
https://youtu.be/mIiqgXqjWCw
https://youtu.be/u5lkhm9u0Gc
These are some samples of Michael Hampton's classes, they go together with the book I linked up there (there's more, but you'll have to pay for 'em)
addendum: Looking up "Analytic Figure Drawing" is the term you might want to look out for if you want more like this (YouTube channel thekirkshop is all about that)
addendum^2 - beyond adding: deviantArt is also great for looking up studies of other people, here are some examples of stuff I found myself
https://www.deviantart.com/funkymonkey1 ... -365567990
https://www.deviantart.com/thethirdcart ... -331806255
https://www.deviantart.com/abdonjromero ... -303510349
https://www.deviantart.com/vladgheneli/ ... -624589833
just lose yourself in there, go wild!
addendum³, episode 3: Besides deviantArt, Artstation (https://www.artstation.com) is a great place to get inspiration and general tutorials, or just feel inadequate about your own art, really. It's a platform for art that all the demigods who belong in the pantheon known as "the art industry" use, so I recommend going there and seeing what the pros come up with, you can sort what type of art you can see, from community to trending to latest to picks, and you can even sort out the media and subject matter, for maximum research capacity. Getting there and looking at that art is a great motivator and over-all way of having their skill "rub off" on you, so go check it out!

You thought you'd see the last of this thread, eh? Oh no, because I bring to the table one of the best approaches to drawing contained in a single book, and all I had to do was search the name on duckduckgo, how crazy is that. Behold!
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8VO-JQ ... hZWHc/edit

That's the Vilppu Drawing Manual. The title is true to the contents, it really is a drawing manual. If you want to draw people, this will be your bibble. Remember that imgur album link I posted up there? Comes from this book, so you know it's good. In conjunction with Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing, Design & Invention, I cannot think of a better way to learn about drawing people from scratch. And, if you want to draw animals, Vilppu has you covered too:

Bam, 2h course on drawing animals, given you know how to draw people.
